Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. The TA-55 Facility Operations organization supports the safe, reliable day-to-day operation of mission-critical facilities within the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production. We are seeking an Operator 4/5 (Facility Operations Technician 4/5) to support equipment operations at TA-55. In this role, you will operate and monitor critical safety systems, perform required surveillances, troubleshoot facility equipment, and support operations, maintenance, science, and engineering activities. This position will be filled at level 4 or 5 based on the selected candidate’s skills and experience, with additional lead responsibilities assigned at the higher level. This is a regular, onsite role in Los Alamos, NM, and may require 24/7 shift and weekend coverage. Salary ranges are as follows:
- Operator 4: $71,200 – $112,900
- Operator 5: $85,900 – $139,900
Responsibilities for Operator 4:
- Operate and monitor critical safety systems in accordance with approved operating instructions and the organization’s training and qualification program
- Perform technical safety requirement and authorization-basis surveillances while ensuring safe, compliant execution of assigned work
- Provide technical support for facility mechanical, electrical, chemical, instrumentation, and control systems used in operations, maintenance, science, and engineering activities
- Inspect equipment operation and maintenance against established standards, follow process sheets and written or verbal direction, and maintain required operating configurations
- Monitor equipment and control panels for alarms, messages, and error indicators; perform diagnostic testing, troubleshoot service problems, and report or respond to malfunctions
- Support multiple facility systems and coordinate effectively with operations, maintenance, engineering, and other technical personnel
Additional Responsibilities for Operator 5:
- Serve as a facility equipment operations expert and recognized lead during off-shifts
- Make technical decisions that support the safe operation of nuclear facilities and provide advanced guidance on hazards, safety practices, and operating configuration
- Apply expert knowledge of lockout/tagout requirements and lead complex troubleshooting and operational response activities
Qualifications:
- Operator 4: Associate degree in relevant field and 5+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation
- Operator 5: Associate degree in a relevant field and 7+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; additional training or certification may be expected
- Extensive experience with procedure compliance, hazard identification and analysis, configuration management, and disciplined equipment operations
- Extensive knowledge of facility instrumentation and controls and electrical and mechanical systems, including heating, ventilation, refrigeration, cooling towers, fire suppression/alarm systems, air compressors, and pneumatic controls
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and diagnose service problems, determine appropriate repair procedures, and read, interpret, and explain engineering, electrical, and mechanical drawings and specifications
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Level 5 candidates must demonstrate expert knowledge of work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and lockout/tagout policies and procedures
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance and Human Reliability Program (HRP) enrollment (U.S. citizenship required)
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Limiting Conditions of Operation as defined in Technical Safety Requirements while performing surveillances or assigned tasks
- Understanding of Integrated Work Management, Integrated Safety Management, and Integrated Safeguards and Security Management principles or equivalent non-DOE programs
- Working knowledge of Conduct of Operations as applied to operating and maintaining a nuclear facility
