One Position in Public Affairs and Administration

The School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA) at Rutgers University, Newark, invites applications for a faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level in the governance, policy, and management of artificial intelligence. The appointment will begin in Fall 2027.

We welcome candidates whose work approaches AI from a public administration, public policy, or related perspectives. AI must be central to the candidate’s scholarship. Applicants should demonstrate deep expertise in both AI and public administration or public policy. Areas of specialization include, but are not limited to: 

• AI governance and regulation
• AI policy design, implementation, and evaluation
• AI in public management, government operations, and public service delivery
• Algorithmic decision making, accountability, and transparency
• The responsible and ethical use of AI in the public and nonprofit sectors

The successful candidate will maintain an active, AI-centered research agenda and teach  at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Experience or interest in teaching students from diverse backgrounds is important. The appointee will contribute to the development, teaching and management of a proposed graduate program in AI Governance, Policy, and Management. Prior experience leading or managing an academic program is not required, but it will be considered an asset. Experience supporting interdisciplinary research, developing external partnerships, and securing grants or other external funding is also valued.

The successful candidate will join a NASPAA accredited public administration program with a strong national and international reputation. U.S. News & World Report ranks Rutgers SPAA 8th nationally in Public Management and Leadership, 8th in Nonprofit Management, and 9th in Urban Policy, among others. The School also holds an overall national ranking of 25th in Best Public Affairs Programs. Furthermore, the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy ranks Rutgers SPAA 3rd in the nation for Public Administration.

As a major public university in New Jersey's largest city, located just a few miles from New York City, the Newark Campus of Rutgers provides students with the knowledge and preparation necessary for leadership roles in an increasingly complex society, with particular attention to its public mission as an anchor institution. The campus has consistently been ranked as one of the most diverse national universities in the United States. Rutgers-Newark is also ranked twelfth in prominence among doctoral degree-granting small universities in the country. SPAA actively engages with the nonprofit and government communities in the greater Newark metro area. The School offers an undergraduate major in public administration, an on-campus MPA, a fully online MPA, an Executive MPA, and a research-oriented Ph.D. Faculty are also involved in several certificate programs. Total enrollment is more than 500 degree-seeking students. Teaching and published research are each important to the School.

Candidates must hold an earned doctorate in public administration or a related field at the time of appointment. Review of applications will begin on November 1, and continue until the position is filled.
