Position Charter: This front-line professional will take on a unique role at Duane Morris – being responsible for creating and supporting marketing and business development (MBD) initiatives for (1) Duane Morris’ global Corporate and Real Estate practices, (2) the firm’s alumni program and (3) lateral partner recruiting and integration. This role will drive initiatives forward while coordinating with the SMM and other stakeholders, as appropriate.
Essential Job Functions/Global Corporate and Real Estate Practices:
- Member of two-person MBD team with primary responsibility for marketing and business development strategies and programs for 200+ lawyer global Corporate and 50+ lawyer global Real Estate practices, Duane Morris’ alumni program and lateral partner integration.
- Build relationships with, and establish a network of, liaisons across the MBD department and the firm to help galvanize engagement for, organize and implement activities to support marketing and BD activities.
- Meet with Practice Group Heads (PGHs), division/subgroup leaders, and attorneys in and out of assigned practices/areas to strategize, prioritize, plan and execute on both broad and specific client support needs, with responsibility for advancing day-to-day execution and recommendations.
- Work with PGHs and SMM to develop and manage MBD budgets, including analyzing requests for budget approval for CPG and REPG attorneys.
- Lead and support the production of successful RFP responses and pitch books, in conjunction with Pitch and Proposal team.
- Together with the Surveys and Directories team, and the Experience Database team, help assess and recommend league table submissions for CPG and REPG and maintain calendar of same.
- Oversee the internal and external promotion of CPG and REPG lawyer transactions, including promoting deal reporting and maintaining deals lists.
- Work with other Practice, Client and Industry teams to foster business development efforts between practice groups, industries and client teams, focusing on strategic marketing and client needs, as well as tactical deliverables.
- Direct the gathering and production of information and research for business development purposes, and/or conduct research, independently and with research team, to prepare client or prospect dossiers.
- Work with SMM and PGHs to develop annual marketing and business development plans and take primary responsibility for implementation and follow-through.
- Oversee conference and client event support, including coordinating sponsorship deliverables, working with SMM and the Administrative Team led by Jeanine Adams (Admin Team) while independently managing timelines, deliverables and communications.
- Coordinate with Media team to strengthen firm’s brand through media relations activities, including interview requests, article publication and sponsorship of local and regional events.
- Develop and pursue opportunities for leveraged/integrated service offerings and cross-selling among practices, industries, client teams and regions.
- Proactively work as positive team member across department and other administrative departments.
Essential Job Functions/Alumni Program:
- Take a leading role in relaunching Duane Morris’ alumni program, in coordination with SMM.
- Liaise with key stakeholders across practices, industries, client teams and offices to identify opportunities for alumni outreach.
- Maintain and oversee content on the alumni website, in newsletters and on social media, coordinating with SMM and others on the MBD team.
- Oversee and support the planning, promotion and execution of in-person and virtual events in key strategic markets, with primary responsibility for day-to-day management and execution, in coordination with SMM and office marketing professionals.
- Work with SMM and CRM to maintain accuracy of alumni database, monitoring career updates and alumni to feature in stories, as well as contact information and engagement history.
Essential Job Functions/Lateral Partner Recruiting and Integration:
- In partnership with the SMM and the Admin Team, update and maintain lateral recruiting materials for CPG and REPG, taking ownership of content updates, revisions and timely execution.
- In collaboration with the SMM and the Legal Recruiting and Development (LRAD) team, update and maintain summer associate recruiting materials for Corporate and Real Esta
- Work with SMM and LRAD to enhance lateral integration program for all partners regardless of practice group
- Facilitate, closely monitor and regularly report on progress towards integration of CPG and REPG lateral partners into key aspects of partnership, including client transfer and development, internal networking, visibility within and outside the firm, billing, associate staffing/supervision, and cultural integration.
- In conjunction with SMM, monitor the business promised in the LPQ for all CPG and REPG laterals to ensure successful realization of hiring objectives/business plan, including identifying issues, recommending action steps and driving follow-up.
Qualifications & Characteristics:
The successful candidate will be a polished, detail-oriented, highly organized and responsive professional with a strong/proven track record of consultative sales experience, creating and implementing successful strategic growth programs for existing clients and new business targets - at the firm, practice, industry, client team and individual attorney levels. Required:
- 8+ years of business development experience in a law firm and/or other professional services firm.
- Strong relationship-development, written and verbal communication, client service, coaching, team building, event production, proposal/content development and presentation skills experience are essential
- Strong project management skills, ability to organize and motivate lawyers and team members to implement and manage effective marketing and business development efforts and a proven ability to build relationships at the executive level are also essential.
- Must be able to communicate with credibility and confidence and effectively interact at all levels of the firm and explain complex matters in simple and understandable terms.
- Excellent attention to detail and responsiveness are critically important.
- Works well under pressure and deadlines, handling multiple projects simultaneously, and achieves results with accuracy and precision.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound discretion and independent judgment to manage competing priorities and make decisions in furtherance of business development objectives is essential.
- Experience with one or more of the practices articulated above would be very helpful.
- Able to apply available technology tools in support of core functions.
- Curiosity, a sense of humor, adaptability to change and uncertainty, and humility are essential.
- Moderate U.S. travel required.
Education: Bachelors’ degree required, JD and/or MBA desirable
