The Opportunity

OPB is looking for a strategic, relationship-centered Director of Planned Giving to help shape the future of public media in Oregon and Southwest Washington. This is an opportunity for a seasoned client-focused professional who knows how to turn trust, thoughtful planning, and long-term vision into lasting community impact.

Working across Development and with internal partners, you’ll provide leadership, practical guidance, and steady stewardship for supporters considering transformational commitments.

Position Details

The Director, Planned Giving, leads one of public media’s most established and successful planned giving programs to secure meaningful and transformational philanthropic support for OPB. This program is integral to the broader Development effort and of significant strategic importance to OPB’s long-term sustainability. This includes serving as the subject matter expert on planned giving techniques and best practices, helping to build a forward-thinking strategy to grow the program, developing relationships with donors, and partnering with Legal and Finance teams to facilitate legacy plans and gift agreements.   

The planned giving program includes OPB’s Legacy Society, our recognition program with more than 2,000 active members who have made outright gifts to long-term funds or included OPB in their estate plans through bequests, beneficiary designations or other deferred gifts to ensure the long-term sustainability of public media in Oregon and Southwest Washington. The recognition and engagement program plays a critical role in future-focused fundraising, strengthening donor relationships, and working with 8,000 prospects to build a pipeline of transformational support that enables OPB to serve audiences for generations to come.  

Responsibilities

45% - Planned Gift Expertise

• Support and counsel the front-line fundraising team to integrate planned giving strategies into broader development and stewardship efforts. 
• Serve as the subject matter expert on charitable estate and financial planning within OPB and KMHD and facilitate philanthropic plans with donors and their advisors on complex charitable giving, ensuring compliance with OPB policies and maintaining strict boundaries of not offering legal or tax advice.
• Stay apprised of federal and state tax legislation that relates to OPB’s gift planning activities for use in conversations with donors and professional advisors.
• Oversight of gift agreement templates and drafts in consultation with OPB’s Legal and Finance teams.

35% - Donor relationship management – Major/Transformational Gifts (renewable and testamentary), Campaign & Special Projects  

• Steward and manage relationships with a prioritized pool of approximately 25 donors with principal-level complex gift agreements. 
• Serve as a key advisor to the Senior Leadership Group, providing insights on performance, donor engagement, and emerging opportunities. 
• Facilitate complex/high-level planned gift inquiries from current and prospective donors, explore other support opportunities and steward relationships to optimize lifetime support.  

10% - Supervisory Duties

• Provide direction, support and evaluate work performance of two additional team members on the Planned Giving team, and collaborate to develop and facilitate professional growth plans. 

10% - Collaboration & Influence

• Establish and maintain relationships with legal and financial professionals to promote awareness of OPB as a worthy candidate for planned gifts. 
• Engage and collaborate with other planned giving practitioners through professional groups and networking.
• Serve as a resource for other planned giving professionals in non-profit work to elevate legacy giving awareness and donations across the board. 

Working Conditions

Work environment: Most work takes place in an office environment, either at OPB HQ (expectation is twice a week onsite) or at a home office.
Schedule: This position typically works Monday-Friday though some weekend/evening work is possible.
Physical demands: Lifting/carrying/moving equipment up to 15 pounds is sometimes required.
Travel: Regular local and regional travel to meet with donors and attend events. Occasional out of state travel for conferences.
Driving: Valid Oregon or Washington drivers license is required.
 

Supervisory Responsibilities

• This position supervises two employees: Planned Giving Advisor and Manager, Bequest Administration.
• The level of supervision includes: Planning Work, Assigning Work, Approving Work, Responding to Grievances, Disciplines/Rewards, Recommending Hiring, Hiring, Recommending Salary Adjustments, Preparing and Signing Performance Reviews, Leading Project Teams.
    

Required Education & Experience

• Background or exposure to estate, tax, or financial disciplines (e.g., through a J.D., CPA, CFP, or related experience), coupled with the ability to understand how these areas influence philanthropic decisions and to partner with donors’ advisors; does not provide donors with legal or financial advice.
   

Preferred Education & Experience 

• At least five years successful fundraising experience in planned giving or related fields with evidence of increasing responsibility. 
   

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Enthusiasm for the mission of OPB.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion and compliance with OPB and AFP ethics policies and standards and operate in alignment with OPB’s policies, values and observable behaviors.
• Background or exposure to estate, tax, or financial disciplines (e.g., through a J.D., CPA, CFP, or related experience), coupled with the ability to understand how these areas influence philanthropic decisions and to partner with donors’ advisors; does not provide donors with legal or financial advice.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a highly effective collaborator. 
• Organized, motivated, proactive and goal driven. Attention to accuracy and completeness of work. 

Preferred Position Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Demonstrated experience in developing effective strategies to lead and grow planned giving programs, as well as managing and coaching planned giving staff.
• Related skills to prospect analysis, marketing and engagement strategy.
• Fluent use of project management software such as Aha! and project management skills. 

Additional Information

• This full-time, regular position reports to the Senior Director of Philanthropy, is unrepresented, and benefits eligible.
• The hiring range for this role will fall between $112,000-$130,000 per year depending on qualifications. Finalists with JDs are preferred and will be given starting offers near the top of the range.
