About the Position:
The Director of Engineering is a corporate-level leader responsible for driving engineering execution, standardization, and performance across all U.S. company manufacturing sites. This role provides oversight and coordination of both product and process engineering functions, ensuring consistent application of engineering practices that support high-reliability electronics manufacturing in regulated industries including aerospace & defense, medical, and industrial markets.
Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, the Director of Engineering partners closely with site leadership, Engineering Managers, Operations, Quality, and Program Management to ensure successful new product introductions (NPI), robust manufacturing processes, and sustained operational performance. This role serves as a key technical leader, guiding engineering teams across multiple sites to achieve alignment in process standards, tooling strategies, and manufacturing best practices while supporting customer requirements and business objectives.
This position requires a balance of technical depth and leadership capability, with the ability to influence across a matrixed organization. The Director of Engineering plays a critical role in improving yield, reducing cost, ensuring compliance with applicable standards (e.g., AS9100, ISO13485, ISO9001), and advancing manufacturing capabilities across SMT, through-hole assembly (THA), box build, conformal coating, and test operations.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate engineering activities across multiple manufacturing sites, ensuring consistent execution of product and process engineering functions aligned with corporate standards and objectives.
- Drive standardization of engineering processes, tools, and methodologies across sites, including NPI processes, DFM/DFT practices, work instruction development, and manufacturing readiness criteria.
- Partner with site Engineering Managers and cross-functional leaders to support successful new product introductions, ensuring designs are manufacturable, processes are robust, and production ramps meet cost, quality, and delivery expectations.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance across key manufacturing processes including SMT, through-hole assembly (THA), box build, conformal coating, and test, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and customer requirements.
- Support customer engagements as a technical leader, including participation in design reviews, technical discussions, quoting support, and resolution of escalations related to engineering or manufacturing performance.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on yield improvement, defect reduction, cycle time reduction, and cost optimization across all sites.
- Establish and promote standard approaches to process validation, process control, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive actions.
- Partner with Quality and Operations to ensure engineering practices support compliance with applicable regulatory and quality standards, including AS9100, ISO13485, ISO9001, and customer-specific requirements.
- Support development and execution of capital expenditure (CAPEX) plans, including evaluation, justification, and deployment of equipment, tooling, automation, and test solutions to enhance manufacturing capability and efficiency.
- Collaborate with Supply Chain and Commodity Management to align engineering requirements with supplier capabilities and support resolution of technical supplier issues.
- Provide mentorship, coaching, and development support to site engineering leaders, fostering a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Monitor engineering performance across sites using defined metrics, identify gaps, and drive corrective actions to improve overall operational performance.
- Ensure effective documentation practices, including development and control of work instructions, process documentation, and engineering records to support consistency and audit readiness.
- Travel to company sites as required to support engineering initiatives, audits, program launches, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned
