About Innerspace Counseling
Innerspace Counseling is New Jersey's premier intensive mental health program specialist serving children, adolescents, adults, and perinatal individuals with primary mental health diagnoses. Each patient in our Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) receives individualized, high-quality care through evidence-based treatments, including DBT and CBT. Our programs provide psychiatric assessment, medication management, individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and comprehensive treatment planning with the goal of supporting long-term recovery and wellness.
Position Overview
Innerspace Counseling is seeking an experienced, Board-Certified Psychiatrist to serve as our Consulting Medical Director of Psychiatry.
This consulting position provides medical leadership and psychiatric oversight for our Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), and outpatient psychiatric services. The Medical Director will collaborate with executive leadership, psychiatric providers, and the multidisciplinary treatment team to ensure high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, and adherence to evidence-based clinical practices.
The primary focus of this position is clinical leadership, oversight, and consultation. Direct patient care will generally be limited to clients who specifically request evaluation or ongoing care by a psychiatrist, with additional clinical services provided only as needed.
Medical Director Responsibilities
- Provide medical oversight and clinical leadership for psychiatric services across the organization.
- Supervise and collaborate with Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs/APNs) in accordance with New Jersey regulations
- Serve as the collaborating physician for psychiatric providers as required.
- Participate in regular clinical case consultations and provide guidance on complex patient cases.
- Review and assist with the development of psychiatric policies, procedures, clinical protocols, and standards of care.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and performance improvement activities.
- Assist with Joint Commission accreditation, state licensing, and regulatory compliance activities.
- Provide consultation regarding clinical documentation, medication management practices, and patient safety initiatives.
- Participate in leadership meetings and multidisciplinary team meetings as needed.
- Serve as a clinical resource for providers and executive leadership.
- Be available for physician consultation regarding admissions, level-of-care determinations, and other clinical matters when appropriate.
- Provide psychiatric evaluations and medication management services on a limited basis, as mutually agreed upon and clinically necessary.
Schedule
Independent Contractor (1099)
Flexible consulting schedule
Primarily remote, with occasional in-person work if needed.
Hours determined based on organizational needs and mutual agreement
Approximately 4-6 hours per month
Requirements
Qualifications
Minimum of three (3) years of experience providing psychiatric care to children, adolescents, and adults.
Previous Medical Director, supervisory, or clinical leadership experience preferred.
Experience supervising or collaborating with Advanced Practice Nurses (PMHNPs/APNs).
Strong knowledge of psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, medication management, and evidence-based treatment.
Knowledge of behavioral healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, and quality improvement principles.
Excellent communication and leadership skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with executive leadership and multidisciplinary treatment teams.
Education, Licensure & Credential Requirements
Required
Medical Degree (MD or DO) from an accredited medical school.
Completion of an accredited Psychiatry Residency Program.
Current unrestricted New Jersey medical license.
Current Board Certification in Psychiatry.
Current Board Certification in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
Active DEA and CDS registration.
Experience treating children (ages 8 and older), adolescents, and adults.
Preferred
Experience within Partial Hospitalization (PHP), Intensive Outpatient (IOP), or other behavioral healthcare settings.
Experience with Joint Commission accreditation and New Jersey behavioral health regulations.
Experience with OCD, Anxiety Disorders, Perinatal Mental Health, Trauma, or other specialty behavioral health populations.
