Description
Augustana University invites applications for the position of Accountant within the university’s Business Office. This full-time position supports the university’s financial operations through account reconciliations, fixed asset and lease accounting, grant accounting, financial reporting, audit preparation, and other general accounting activities. The Accountant plays an important role in maintaining accurate financial records and supporting the university’s financial reporting and compliance requirements.
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented accounting professional with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, experience working with general ledger accounting and financial statements, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Experience in nonprofit, higher education, or another complex accounting environment is preferred.
Responsibilities include the following:
- Perform monthly reconciliations of endowment and other investment accounts, bank and bond fund accounts, payroll withholding accounts, suspense accounts, and other receivable and payable accounts.
- Prepare and post journal entries and review general ledger activity for accuracy.
- Review general ledger accounts for capitalizable expenditures in accordance with the university’s fixed asset policy.
- Maintain fixed asset records, including additions, retirements, and depreciation.
- Review lease transactions and maintain supporting lease accounting documentation.
- Perform accounting for the university’s lease agreements.
- Review revenue accounts and record appropriate deferrals.
- Prepare and process fund account transfers.
- Support grant accounting, including calculating and recording indirect costs and assisting with calculation of the university’s indirect cost rate.
- Compile required external and compliance reporting, including reports for governmental and regulatory agencies.
- Assist with preparation of IRS Form 990 workpapers and supporting schedules.
- Prepare and balance workpapers and schedules for the annual external financial statement audit.
- Assist with preparation of monthly and annual financial statements.
- Assist with development and preparation of the university’s annual budget.
- Support accounting and reporting for endowments, restricted funds, and other university funds as needed.
- Collaborate with Business Office staff and campus partners to resolve accounting questions, maintain accurate financial records, and improve accounting processes.
- Participate in special projects and other accounting responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- Three or more years of professional accounting experience preferred.
- Three or more years of preparing and presenting financial statements.
- Experience with general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
- Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred; experience within a college, university, or other large nonprofit organization is particularly helpful.
- Experience with grant, fund, endowment, fixed asset, or lease accounting is preferred.
- CPA designation and/or prior public accounting experience is preferred but not required.
