Class Title:  Outreach Specialist

Supervisor: Executive Director

Supervises: Interns and office volunteers working on related projects

Salary:  $35,000-$39,000

OVERVIEW

Bluegrass Greensource (BGGS) is looking for a highly motivated and experienced professional to join its team as an Outreach Specialist. This position will be part of the adult and community outreach in Lexington and surrounding counties, and will manage the Green Check program.

Central to this position is a commitment to Greensource’s vision and long-term goals along with experience and expertise in project management. The Outreach Specialist will be responsible for developing relationships with local businesses and community organizations, and helping them make changes that will improve our local environment.

MORE ABOUT BLUEGRASS GREENSOURCE

Bluegrass Greensource was formed in 2001 to help Central Kentuckians understand that small behavior changes can make a large impact on our local environment.  Our mission is to empower the Bluegrass to create a sustainable environment.  We currently have a staff of 10 who are dedicated to environmental education about water quality, waste reduction and energy efficiency.  We focus on preK-12, business and adult education in 20 counties.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The duties and responsibilities of the Outreach Specialist include but are not limited to the following:

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Green Check Business Program including:
    1. Recruit and consult with new Green Check Business Partners
    2. Maintain and increase participation from existing business partners, and provide guidance for accomplishing sustainability goals
    3. Promote Green Check Partners
    4. Maintain social media and web sites
  • Help facilitate recycling outreach and logistics for Lexington businesses
    1. New recycling dumpster education and conversion
    2. Provide education for businesses requesting a new recycling dumpster
  • Reporting
    1. Monthly and quarterly to the City of Lexington.
    2. Accurate tracking of milestones and accomplishments
  • Coordination of interns as needed
  • Program review
    1. Research to assist entities with recycling/waste reduction, water quality and energy efficiency
    2. Recommend and implement adult outreach on various other sustainability initiatives
  • Prepare and give presentations
    1. Lunch and learns
    2. Business/apartment resident/community group workshops and trainings
    3. Rain barrel workshops
  • Organize litter cleanups
  • Plan and participate in numerous waste audits

General Programs:

  1. Represent Bluegrass Greensource at workshops, conferences, and meetings as requested by Directors
  2. Prepare sections of annual reports as needed
  3. Maintain accurate records of all outreach activities
  4. Maintain accurate weekly time and travel records

 General

  1. Supervises interns and office volunteers on related projects
  2. Works with Directors and funding entity(s) to develop program plans, both short and long-term
  3. Assists the Directors with organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating the programs within the guidelines established by the Board of Directors and program funders.
  4. Develops and maintains partnerships that will assist in carrying out program objectives
  5. Designs and implements outreach campaigns that will aid in the achievement of program objectives
  6. Organizes and conducts youth activities in formal and informal settings
  7. Recruits long-term volunteers (i.e., interns) to assist with programs
  8. Creates newsletter articles and other press items related to program activities and objectives
  9. Makes presentations to a wide variety of public groups
  10. Assistance with setup & execution of organization events
  11. Produces annual reports on relevant programs and completes other reports as required by funding agency(s)
  12. Represents Bluegrass Greensource at meetings
  13. Shares in workload with staff to complete any job that has priority at the time
  14. Assists staff with handling of phone calls, faxing of information, and other questions or needs that the public may have of Bluegrass Greensource
  15. Performs related duties as required


Requirements

Minimum Qualifications and Characteristics

Training and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Natural Resource Conservation and Management, Environmental Science or related field supplemented by five years experience in administering programs, projects or business operations, including supervisory experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge and experience: 

Personal characteristics: Highly self-motivated; highly creative; commitment to strategic thinking and innovative action; ability to both lead and collaborate effectively; well-organized, attentive to detail, and able to work on multiple projects at once; keen sense of humor!

Technology and software: Strong computer skills and strong knowledge of design and website software.

Communications: Strong writing skills; strong interpersonal communication skills.

Physical: Close vision with or without corrective lenses necessary for computer work; manual dexterity needed to operate computer; ability to perform assigned duties in a time-efficient manner; valid driver’s license.

Special Licensing Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Additional Requirements:

  1. Must be able to travel throughout Central Kentucky
  2. Must be able to work nights and weekends as required.
