Do you have a passion for microbes and want to help in the development of microbial solutions for a more sustainable world? Do you have experience using proteomics and metabolomics to study host-microbe interactions or for finding interesting microbes from large collections and diverse libraries?  If so, you could be our next colleague in Microbe Research. As a Multi-Omics Scientist/Sr. Scientist, you will work on a cross-disciplinary team of experts in genomics, bioinformatics, analytical chemistry, data science, and biochemistry.  You will draw on expertise in analytical biochemistry, proteomics and metabolomics to develop and implement methods for evaluating the performance and phenotype of wild-type and genetically modified microbes.

In Microbe Research, California we use classical industrial microbes and develop new ones to bring Biological Solutions to some of our customers' toughest problems in biofuels, agriculture, food & beverage, and beyond.  We are connected to other global Microbe Research sites in Berlin, Research Triangle Park, NC, and Copenhagen.  This position will join the Microbe Analytics & Automation team, where we deploy technologies for building, testing & understanding the performance and health of our microbes at high, medium, and low throughputs. 
 
In this role you’ll make an impact by:

  • Developing, validating, implementing, and executing proteomics and metabolomics methods that let us identify promising new microbes with desirable phenotypes, and characterizing lead microbes in additional detail
  • Using and writing methods and scripts for automated capture, processing, and analysis of proteomics and metabolomics data
  • Working with a team of lab automation engineers to implement methods into high throughput formats
  • Working within an agile team to design and conduct scientific experiments to support multiple research projects
  • Actively collaborating with other Novozymes proteomics and metabolomics experts at other global sites
  • Interpreting experimental results and sharing them with the local and global Novozymes community
  • Ensuring timely delivery of results to internal or external customers
  • Mentoring research associates working on proteomic and metabolomic efforts.


Requirements

To succeed in this position, you must have:

  • Demonstrated examples of MS-based proteomics and metabolomics workflows you have developed and utilized for screening complex samples
  • Knowledge of MS-based quantification and identification methods for proteomics and metabolomics
  • Hand-on experience operating and maintaining HRMS instruments (e.g. QTOF, IMS-QTOF, timsTOF), QQQ-MS, GCMS
  • Hands-on experience developing sample preparation methods from cultures, plants, or animal tissues (liquid-liquid extraction, SPE, etc).
  • Experience with MS-based data processing tools for both proteomics and metabolomics
  • Demonstrated proficiency developing scripts (Python, R, JMP or other) and processes for data capture, processing, and analysis of large omics datasets
  • General understanding of strain engineering techniques in bacteria, yeast, and filamentous fungi
  • Excellent communication skills—you can succinctly explain complicated mass spectrometry methods to both novices and experts
  • A detail-oriented and self-driven attitude to conduct hands-on experiments in the laboratory
  • A PhD degree in a biological science, biochemistry, or analytical chemistry with 3+ years’ postdoctoral or industry experience.  MS or BS degrees with applicable practical experience will also be considered.  Position will be hire at level commensurate with experience.

Candidates with the following experience are especially desirable:

  • Application of proteomics and metabolomics for studying microbes, microbiomes, and host-microbe interactions in plant, animal, and human contexts. 
  • Previous use of Agilent & Bruker (TIMSTOF) instrumentation and data processing pipelines, and experience with multiple acquisition modes (DDA, DIA, PRM, MRM)
  • Using GeneData Analyst & Expressionist for analysis of proteomics & metabolomic data
  • Experience with visualization and interpretation of multi-omics results
  • Experience outside of academia
