Ultragenyx Headquarters are located in Novato, CA, 25 miles north of San Francisco with an alternate campus located in Brisbane, California and new Process Development laboratories in South San Francisco, California.

Position Summary

Ultragenyx is looking for a Sr Scientist with the passion and creativity for analytical chemistry and characterization of great medicines for rare and ultra-rare diseases.  The Research Associate/Sr Research Associate will be part of the Technical Development/Analytical Operations group under the Technical Operations Organization.  This position will be involved in supporting early and late stages of process analytical method development and characterization activities. This position will collaborate closely with cross-functional departments to achieve corporate goals and objectives. This position will also oversee and direct project work outsourced to CMO/CROs.

The successful candidate should have experience in an analytical testing environment with direct experience in UPLC/HPLC and/or LC/MS methods, various separation techniques (various modes of chromatography and electrophoresis), basic wet chemistry, UV/Vis quantitative techniques. The successful candidate has general understanding of basic biochemistry, and protein and nucleic acids structure and function. The successful candidate is experienced enough in lab operations to be a self-starter with the ability to work under limited supervision, and who is seeking to be part of an innovative team. The successful candidate is detail-oriented, organized, focused and meticulous in their laboratory work and record-keeping, open and transparent in communications with colleagues and management.

This is a unique opportunity to join an early stage biotech company focused on developing life transforming therapeutics for patients with rare diseases.  This position will be instrumental in growing the company’s therapeutic portfolio, from early-discovery development stage to commercial launch and be a critical part of creating an innovation team for the development of the company’s next generation of products.

Responsibilities

  • The Analytical Operations Lab is part of the Technical Development Laboratories.
    • •Lead junior scientist and/or contractors with UX143 BLA stage characterization studies

      •Review and summarize numerous internal (AD & other UGX groups) and external data/reports (CDMOs/CROs)

      •Function as AD SME for various quality event/investigations, provide troubleshooting support to internal/external partners

      •Work closely with (and provide necessary guidance to) QC, QA, Regulatory, and various external partners

      •Serve as point of contact with multiple external partners

      •Support method transfer and QC method validation

      •Author/review reports and BLA sections

Requirements

  • MS or PhD degree with 7+ years of laboratory experience (Scientist) in Chemistry, Biology, or a related field required; Advanced degree is highly desirable.
  • Experienced in analytical testing environment.
  • Experience with HPLC, LC/MS, capillary and gel electrophoresis analytical methods, instrumentation, and sample preparation techniques.
  • Experience in wet chemistry, analytical sample preparation (including protein and nucleic acids digests preparation), and quantitative UV/Vis-based techniques.
  • Protein (MAbs, etc), oligonucleotide or RNA/DNA handling and/or testing experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and proven ability to work autonomously and manage effectively in a matrix environment.
  • High attention to detail in experimental work is paramount. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple projects with tight deadlines is necessary.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel – including data analysis and calculations, Power Point) - Proficiency in statistical analysis software is desired.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communications skills and the ability to deal effectively with a variety of personnel both internally and outside the company.
