Orchestra of St. Luke’s (OSL)

Recognized as an industry leader in innovation, Orchestra of St. Luke’s fulfills its mission through programming in three areas: Performance, Education and Community Engagement, and The DiMenna Center for Classical Music. With subscription series in each of Carnegie’s three halls, an annual partnership with Paul Taylor Dance Company at Lincoln Center, a summer residency at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, experimental programming at The DiMenna Center, and concerts in nearly 20 venues across all five boroughs, OSL is distinguished by artistic flexibility and financial stability. OSL’s Principal Conductor Bernard Labadie is recognized as one of the world’s leading conductors of Baroque and Classical repertoire. Anna Clyne is the Mentor for OSL’s annual DeGaetano Composition Institute. OSL performs approximately 60-70 concerts annually and celebrates its 50th anniversary in the 2024-25 season. 

Job purpose 

To inspire growth and loyalty in Orchestra of St. Luke’s audiences through compelling artistic programming.

Works closely with President & Executive Director, Principal Conductor, DeGaetano Composition Institute Mentor, major artistic partners, senior management, and musician committees to develop season programming that:

  • achieves OSL’s artistic goals and business objectives,
  • raises organization’s profile and relevance,
  • advances the organization’s DEI strategic priorities in audiences, repertoire, and talent.

Engages guest artists, guest conductors, and collaborators, negotiating fees and expense allowances while fostering positive long-term relationships with artists, artistic managers, and agencies. Ensures smooth administration of all contract terms, on budget and schedule.

 Develops season themes with President & Executive Director, Principal Conductor, and partners. Provides organization with programmatic insights and information necessary for effective, accurate, and persuasive internal and external messaging.

Working conditions

  • Physical Requirements include those of a standard office and conversational functions

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $100,000 to $105,000 per year.  The specific salary in that range will depend on the applicant’s skills, experience, and level of responsibility.  Benefits package is very competitive, including medical, dental, employer-paid retirement plan, and vacation, personal, office holidays, and sick days.

Duties and responsibilities

Artistic Planning

  • In collaboration with President, Principal Conductor, Composition Institute Mentor, partners, and musicians, plans 15-20 programs per year (OSL productions and co-productions).
  • 3 Orchestra Series Concerts in Stern Auditorium presented by Carnegie Hall
  • 3 Bach Festival Concerts in Zankel Hall presented in association with Carnegie Hall
  • 3 Chamber Music Concerts presented by OSL in Weill Recital and Merkin Halls
  • DeGaetano Composition Institute
    • Planning and implementation of weeklong institute at The DiMenna Center
    • National competitive composer selection process
    • Coordination of three annual commissions
  • 3 multi-disciplinary “Visionary Sounds” concerts presented by OSL at the DiMenna Center
  • Programs for annual DiMenna Center Benefit with Susan Graham and Gift of Music Gala.
  • Support for other programming and partnerships, including:
    • WQXR
    • Caramoor
    • Paul Taylor Dance “Moving Music”

Guest Artists, Collaborators

  • Negotiates and administers contracts with 25-35 guest artists, 1-2 choirs, including visa and other travel logistics.
  • Provides and arranges for artist liaison services during performance periods.
  • Prepares, processes, and tracks guest artist agreements, including payment processing and tracking of all fees, expenses, and associated documentation.
  • Manages logistics for all artist needs including travel, hotel, local transportation, hospitality, complimentary tickets, itineraries, and all non-technical elements of artist contract riders. 

Manages planning timeline to provide accurate and complete information vital to organization functions, including operations, publications, marketing, PR, sponsorship, development, and finance. 

Manages guest artist budget as developed with President and VP of Finance and Administration. 

Provide constructive feedback during rehearsal and performance periods that advances OSL goals for artistic excellence.

Provide strategic leadership on two musician committees: Artistic Programming Committee and Artistic Personnel Committee. 

Leads development of YouTube channel content 


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education or training in orchestral music
  • Five years progressive administrative experience in an arts organization with a focus on artistic planning
  • Detail orientation with excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Good relationships with soloists, conductors, managers, and presenters
  • Expertise in artist contracts, visas, transportation/travel arrangements, and artist liaison duties
  • In-depth and demonstrable knowledge of orchestral and chamber music repertoire
  • Skilled negotiator
  • Empathetic and calm demeanor
  • Strong team player with a sense of humor
  • Experience working with union musicians
  • Extensive knowledge of New York City’s performing arts sector
