Job Description:
Budget Title: Lead Programmer/Analyst (SL-3)
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Binghamton University's Information Technology Services is seeking an experienced, engaging, innovative, and collaborative individual to join our Public Computing and Student Technology group. The Public Computer Lab Administrator is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and support of the university's public computer labs (Pods/Information Commons). This role ensures that lab environments are reliable, secure, accessible, and supportive of teaching, learning, and research. The Administrator provides technical support to students, faculty, and staff, manages hardware and software resources, works with student employees, and collaborates with campus partners to enhance the computing experience. The Public Computer Lab Administrator reports to the Manager of Public Computing and Student Technology.
The responsibilities of the Public Computer Lab Administrator will include:
- Oversee daily operations of public computer labs and ITS classrooms, ensuring spaces, equipment, and printing systems are clean, organized, and fully functional.
- Assist with managing lab and classroom scheduling and monitor space usage.
- Maintain and update lab policies, user documentation, signage, and knowledge-based resources.
- Deploy, update, and maintain hardware, peripherals, printers, operating systems, application software, and virtual desktop environments.
- Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, network, and accessibility-related issues while ensuring compliance with security, privacy, and accessibility standards.
- Monitor lab usage, generate reports, and assist with planning technology upgrades, renovations, and service improvements.
- Provide frontline technical assistance to students, faculty, and staff, collaborating with academic departments, library teams, and IT groups on instructional and infrastructure needs.
- Assist with hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising student employees and lab assistants.
Requirements:
- Associate's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field
- At least two years' experience supporting Windows, macOS, and/or Linux environments
- Experience deploying and managing software and updates
- Experience installing, supporting, and troubleshooting computers and peripherals
- Effective customer service, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- Experience with ITSM tools such as TeamDynamix
- Experience working in a higher education or public computing environment
- Four or more years of experience collaborating across multiple teams and departments in a large organization
- Knowledge of lab management tools (SCCM, JAMF, Intune, etc.), imaging systems, and software deployment solutions
- Working knowledge of virtual machines, including creating, managing, and maintaining VM pools
- Knowledge of audio-visual systems, including projectors, displays, screens, and speaker systems
- Experience supervising or training student employees
- Familiarity with accessibility technologies and ADA requirements
