Position Summary:
The Graphic Design Manager is responsible for managing the design, creative development, and production of print and digital assets in support of ASA’s brand and product portfolio. Oversees the process from concept to completion for each project. Leads the graphic design approaches for ASA marketing, communications, publications, meetings, education, and other business units—providing strategic guidance, art direction, and layout services for collateral materials, products, promotions, and other content. Establishes and manages the centralized workflow and resources for graphic design and production services, internal and external. Oversees ASA’s graphic standards and brand compliance throughout the organization. Directly manages graphic design and visual communication needs for monthly news publication, ASA Monitor. Manages and upholds ASA photography standards and related needs for annual meeting, governance, and special events as well as special projects for Organizational Excellence, the ASA foundations, and various ASA business units and member leadership.
Responsibilities include providing leadership and direction to the individual(s) within the work team. Oversees workload, project prioritization, and resource management.
Primary Position Responsibilities:
Manages all graphic design needs for monthly news publication, ASA Monitor, working directly with Editor-in-Chief, Director of Publications, and the publications team to create and design monthly theme and column iconography, and all article graphics to enhance the visual communication for print version, as well as for website and online content. Selects and provides authentic photography per themed content; retouches and formats all author photos. Reviews article and issue proofs of ASA Monitor and ASA Monitor+ special edition to ensure design and layout meet ASA standards.
Supervises Graphic Design and Production Specialist. Builds and cultivates successful graphics and production team of high-performing staff (and external design and production resources) who demonstrate high quality design and strong commitment to meet deadlines and expectations. Recommends and supports career development of staff.
Collaborates with Marketing and Communications, Public Relations, and other business units across the organization, including staff and members, to discuss, recommend, and deliver on graphic design needs ensuring creative strategies and approaches align with communication and business objectives. Collaborates to develop Creative Development Briefs and other tools to guide creative output and requests those tools when needed to ensure strong creative output is delivered.
Leads creative team in the concept, design, layout, and production of marketing and promotional collateral, publications, signage, packaging, and other designed content.
Leads team to establish and uphold graphic design best practices for digital-only, print-only, and cross-platform applications.Ensures all designs for print and digital outputs comply with brand standards. Communicates and upholds brand standards across organization.
Manages procurement and presentation of all ASA photography, original and stock, to uphold appropriate branding and best practices to ensure all ASA meetings, events and other activities, campaigns or programs are captured effectively and efficiently and presented in accordance with the brand and to portray positive imagery of members and the profession. Manages digital asset photo library and platform (e.g., Canto), including retouching, uploading, and tagging of all photography. Recommends appropriate photography for stakeholders and business units. Manages scheduling of freelance photographers for Board portraits, ANESTHESIOLOGY and other meetings or special events, and on-location OR photo shoots.
Designs and produces ASA Annual Report and ASAPAC Annual Report, and other compendiums of information as needed, in accordance with strategy and Creative Development Briefs.
Collaborates with publishing partner (e.g., Wolters Kluwer) and ASA publications team on monthly production schedule, file transfers, specs. and details. Coordinates monthly “house” ads with marketing team, graphic design specialist, and publishing partner. Participates in necessary editorial and production meetings.
Manages all elements of vendor relationships, including securing quotes, understanding production specifications, providing files and art direction, approving proofs, etc. Identifies, evaluates, recommends, and coordinates provision of external resources when needed to ensure creative needs and deadlines are met. Builds and maintains relationships with external vendors and resources, such as freelancers, production crews, printers, mailers, and graphic designers.
Works with Anesthesiology journal Senior Managing Editor, Senior Digital Communications Specialist, and Editorial Board members to produce journal visual abstracts and other design work as needed.
Delivers graphic design and production pieces for other business units as needed, on time and within budget, per negotiated delivery deadlines and budgets.
Manages work team and resources, including establishing processes and tools to field incoming creative requests and to organize and prioritize workload and allocation. Builds and cultivates successful team of high-performing staff who demonstrate strong commitment. Ensures the department meets deadlines and monitors performance against department goals.

ASA conducts market analysis of its positions, ensuring the compensation is comparable with jobs of the same level, skills, and abilities. Additionally, ASA believes in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as part of any final offer. ASA strives to be transparent with our pay practices both internally and externally.
Position Compensation:
This position is an exempt/salaried position. The target hiring pay range for this position is: $94,000 - $115,000 annually. This position is not eligible for a yearly bonus/incentive.
Compensation decisions consider a wide range of factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, skills, certifications, business needs, and organizational policies.

Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office environment with light noise. Work may be frequently interrupted. The employee will spend most of the workday sitting, computing, and talking/hearing. May require lifting (boxes) in the 10-25 lb. range requiring the ability to bend at the waist and knee.

Requirements
Position Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, fine arts, or related field highly desired.
Minimum of 5 years of graphic design experience. Portfolio with a large scope of produced health care, education, association or similar collateral pieces preferred.
Previous supervisory experience preferred.
Health care, medical, and association experience preferred.
Familiarity with email marketing platforms, including template creation, preferred.
Strong computer proficiency, including cross platform experience required (Mac and PC).
Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is required, especially Photoshop.
Knowledge of workflow management tools, such as Wrike, preferred.
Experience working with vendors (printers, freelancers, video producers, etc.) required.
Knowledge of production processes, printing, and mailing required.
Ability to produce high quality and error free work.
Ability to think creatively and innovatively to produce new ideas.
Ability to work in fast-paced environment and keep to strict deadlines and publication cycles.
Highly developed professionalism and interpersonal skills, affinity for networking and demonstrated high level of confidence and poise with a strong member service orientation.
Ability to organize and analyze insights, communicate with stakeholders, develop recommendations and proposals for solving problems while exhibiting realistic understanding of issues.
Demonstrate personal integrity in interactions with vendors, contractors and in communication with members and staff.
