The nonprofit Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation supports one of the largest urban parks in the United States, preserving over 8,000 acres of natural open space in San Diego. We work to enhance visitor experiences, fund educational programs, support habitat restoration, and promote stewardship of Mission Trails, a treasured community resource.
Position Overview
We're seeking a creative and organized Communications Coordinator to amplify our mission and engage the community in protecting and enjoying Mission Trails Regional Park. This role will execute our communications strategy across multiple platforms, tell compelling stories about the park and our work, and build connections with diverse audiences who care about conservation and outdoor recreation.
Key Responsibilities
You will execute our Communications Plan by crafting engaging content for our website, social media channels, digital communications, newsletters, and press releases that highlight the park's natural beauty, the MTRP Foundation’s public programs, major projects, volunteer opportunities, and conservation initiatives. Working closely with our team, you'll develop communications materials for fundraising campaigns, special events, and community partnerships. You'll also manage our donor communications, ensuring supporters feel connected to the impact of their contributions.
This role involves coordinating with park staff, volunteers, photographers, and community partners to gather stories and create authentic narratives about the park experience. You'll track engagement metrics, analyze what resonates with our audiences, and continuously refine our messaging strategy. You may assist with on-site communications support and media coordination at Foundation events.
Requirements
Qualifications
We're looking for someone with 3-4 years of communications, marketing, or public relations experience, ideally in the nonprofit, environmental, or outdoor recreation sectors. You should have demonstrated skills in writing for diverse audiences, managing social media platforms, and creating visual content. Strong project management abilities and comfort working independently are essential.
Experience with tools like email marketing platforms (such as Constant Contact) and content management systems is essential and experience in cultivating a strong social media presence is a plus. Most importantly, you should have genuine enthusiasm for environmental conservation, outdoor recreation, and community engagement.

Location
This role will be in-person at the MTRP Foundation office at the park’s Visitor and Interpretive Center located at 1 Father Junipero Serra Trail in San Diego.
